Dr Watson to Sherlock Holmes
“I have heard you say it is difficult for a man to have any object in daily use without leaving the impress of his individuality upon it in such a way as a trained observer might read it.”1
Objects are imbued with latent messages of the people, times and places they bear witness to. Utensils tarnished with frequent domestic service, old toys that show the devotion of their playmates, tools discarded because the machines they were made for are now obsolete. These mundane items carry with them a value and poignancy over and above their intended purpose.
My work commemorates the ordinary. Those everyday things we take for granted that become part of the fabric of our daily lives remaining long after we are gone, the archaeological finds of the future.
